How might we
Create a buyer and seller platform where the sellers can trade environmental credits in one place?

First Understand how credits are sold.

To start I had to understand how the market works. Below are the stages of how an emission reduction program.

Generate Credits

A company can earn carbon credits by:

  • Reducing emissions (e.g., switching to renewable energy).

  • Capturing emissions (e.g., carbon capture or afforestation).

  • Avoiding emissions (e.g., energy efficiency upgrades).

Each verified tonne of CO₂ reduced or removed typically earns 1 carbon credit.

Certify & Verify

Before selling, the project must be:

  • Verified by a third-party auditor.

  • Registered under a recognized standard (e.g., Verra, Gold Standard, or under government-regulated schemes).

  • Issued tradable credits after validation.

Carbon Market

Companies can then sell their credits via:

  • Sold to other businesses or individuals wanting to offset emissions.

  • Traded through carbon brokers, retail platforms, or marketplaces

Monetize

The seller earns revenue by:

  • Direct sales (fixed price or negotiated).

  • Auctions or bids on exchanges.

  • Forward contracts (selling future credits from ongoing projects).

Report & Retire

Last step: Once sold and used, credits are "retired" in a registry to prevent double counting. As well as the Seller/buyer must track and report the transaction for transparency.
The goal is for Rewatt to be the "goto" buying and selling platform for Companies that participate in emission reduction programs or generate more carbon credits than they need, can sell their excess credits through voluntary or compliance carbon markets.

The diagram below outlines the process a utility company, one that installs solar systems, can follow to build a program using Rewatt’s platform. This program enables both new and existing homeowners to generate carbon credits through their participation in the solar initiative.

Rewatt needed a way to connect with companies like Enmax, which provide solar installations to both businesses and homeowners. To achieve this, we developed a white-label solution that enables Rewatt to integrate with and enroll energy-producing sites into the ENMAX Solar Rebate Program.
